Coaching Philosophy

My coaching philosophy is built on three pillars: Character, Classroom, Court

Character – I believe in developing young men of integrity, accountability, and discipline. Success on the court is temporary; character lasts a lifetime. Our program emphasizes leadership, respect, and personal growth.

Classroom – Academics serve as the foundation for long-term success. I expect players to be as disciplined in the classroom as they are on the court. I track grades, hold study sessions, and instill the importance of education as the key to future opportunities.

Court – When character and academics are prioritized, excellence in basketball follows. I emphasize hard work, smart decision-making, and team success over individual accolades.

I view the basketball court as a classroom where athletes learn how to be leaders, problem solvers, and critical thinkers. The foundation of this philosophy is elevated and clear expectations, discipline, and the three C's of Leadership: Communication, Collaboration, and Commitment.

With elevated clear expectations and consistent discipline of athletes thrive by learning using problem solving and critical thinking skills to be successful. Little things like proper wearing of uniforms, proper techniques, and communicating require daily attention and this dedication creates in a player natural instincts and discipline in more importing things like their character, academics, and the way they manage their social life.

Three C's of Leadership; Communication, Collaboration, and Commitment.

Communication

Must establish and build relationships at the team level and individual level with players.

Must communicate on a deeper level to understand a player’s intentions and actions.

Must be successful mentor:

Be accessible

Actively listen

Truly care

Collaboration

Eliminate the "I" mentality by always using the words "our" and "we".

Manage your business in the C's of a basketball player:

Character - be mindful of what you do, you are a reflection of us

Community - do something for the less fortunate

Classroom - be the best student you can be

Court -"Do your job!"

Commitment

Set your priorities: God-Family-Work.

Lead by example. Don't be what you don't want others to be.

Build trust through meeting and not just in the work place.

People must be convinced you care. Be committed to their health and well-being.

Live your "dash." On your tombstone 1965 - ?? Live your dash and touch lives.

My Personal Professional Oath: As your MENTOR, I PROMISE to work, grind and push you as we put forward a 10 effort daily, and at

the days end, we will BOTH be EXHAUSTED from striving for GREATNESS.

Academic Philosophy & Expectations

*Success in the classroom is non-negotiable.*

As an educator and coach, I firmly believe that athletics and academics go hand in hand. My commitment is to develop student-athletes who excel in the classroom and the game of basketball. Academic success lays the foundation for future opportunities, and I hold my players to high standards when it comes to academics. I expect my players to maintain strong academic performance and uphold the highest standards of character, discipline and responsibility. My approach includes:

Academic Monitoring – Regularly tracking player grades, attendance, and effort in class. Players who struggle academically will have mandatory study sessions.

Study Habits & Time Management – Teaching players how to balance athletics and academics through structured schedules and study routines.

Tutoring & Support – Encouraging players to seek academic assistance when needed and providing access to resources for improvement.

Communication with Teachers – Maintaining open lines of communication with faculty to ensure student-athletes meet academic expectations.

Eligibility & Accountability – Holding players accountable for their academic performance. If they do not meet team academic standards, they risk losing playing time.

Life Skills Development – Teaching student-athletes the importance of goal setting, discipline, and long-term academic and career planning.

Offense Philosophy

*Offense is Spacing & Spacing is Offense*

Philosophy: Adaptability & Player-Centered Offense

Our offensive system is built on fluidity, adaptability, and maximizing the strengths of our players. Rather than forcing players into a rigid system, I tailor our offensive approach to fit the personnel I have each season. This allows us to play fast when I have speed, inside-out when I have size, and spread the floor when I have shooters.

Offensive Principles:

Pace & Control – I play at a tempo that suits our personnel. If I have athletic guards, I push in transition. If I have strong post players, I slow it down and work inside-out.

Spacing & Movement – Proper spacing creates driving lanes, open shots, and easy scoring opportunities. Players are always in motion, cutting, screening, and relocating.

Player Development – Every player is expected to develop all-rounded offensive game. Ball-handling, passing, and shooting are emphasized regardless of position.

Decision-Making Over Set Plays – Rather than running strict plays, I teach reads and reactions based on what the defense gives us. Players are encouraged to make smart basketball decisions.

Unselfishness & Ball Movement – I emphasize "good to great" shots, encouraging players to pass up contested looks for better opportunities.

Base Offensive Schemes:

Transition Offense (Primary & Secondary Breaks)

I push the ball off misses and turnovers to create early scoring opportunities.

Wings sprint wide, the ball handler makes quick decisions, and the bigs run the floor hard.

If an early shot isn’t available, I like to flow seamlessly into our half-court offense.

Motion-Based Half-Court Offense (Read & React)

Spacing & Player Movement: I use 4-out, 1-in or 5-out formations depending on personnel. Players continuously cut, screen, and move without the ball.

Drive & Kick: Guards are trained to attack gaps, forcing help and kicking out to open shooters or dump-offs inside.

Post Play (If Available): If I have dominant post players, I establish deep position and feed the post early.

Ball Screen Actions (Pick & Roll Variations)

High Pick & Roll: Creates space for the ball handler to drive, pull up, or find the roll man.

Wing Ball Screens: Helps perimeter players attack with an advantage.

Pick & Pop: If our big players can shoot, I utilize pick-and-pop action to stretch the defense.

Inside-Out Offense (If Post Presence Exists)

If I have a strong post player, I emphasize touches in the paint to collapse the defense.

Post-ups lead to kick-outs for open threes or high-low action if I have multiple bigs.

Dribble Drive Motion (If Guards Are Stronger)

Guards are encouraged to attack downhill, forcing rotations and creating open looks for shooters or cutters.

Perimeter players are trained to relocate and space properly to keep the floor open.

Adjustments Based on Personnel

Fast & Athletic Team: More transition offense, dribble-drive penetration, and full-court pressure.

Big & Physical Team: More post-ups, inside-out play, and offensive rebounding emphasis.

Balanced Team: Equal mix of motion offense, ball screens, and transition play.

Shooting-Heavy Team: More 5-out spacing, ball screens, and drive-and-kick offense.

Defense Philosophy

Toughness: There are three (3) types:

Mental Toughness – The ability to stay focused, composed, and confident under pressure. It means shaking off mistakes, adapting to challenges, and maintaining discipline in tough moments.

Physical Toughness – The ability to endure the physical demands of the game - fighting through contact, maintaining stamina, and playing with intensity from start to finish.

Emotional Toughness – The ability to control emotions, stay poised, and channel energy productively. It involves handling frustration, staying positive, and leading by example through adversity.

Pressure Defense: Prioritize aggressive, disciplined defense, making opponents uncomfortable.

Communication & Rotations: Defenders must talk, anticipate, and rotate quickly.

Rebounding: Every possession ends with a rebound. I emphasize TAGGING (boxing-out) and winning the physical battles.

Versatility: Players must be able to guard multiple positions and adapt to different defensive schemes.

Practice Philosophy

The Central Basketball program is built on a foundation of structured, high-intensity, and organized practices designed to develop skilled, disciplined, and mentally tough athletes. Our approach emphasizes efficiency, competition, and situational awareness, ensuring that players are prepared to succeed at the highest level.

Practice is the driving force behind our program’s daily improvement. In a Central practice environment, players are not just taught plays—they are taught how to think and play the game. Our philosophy centers on instilling discipline, meeting expectations, and fostering communication, collaboration, and commitment in every athlete.

Because no practice can replicate every possible game scenario, we implement drills that simulate real-game intensity and speed. This methodology builds mental toughness, adaptability, and the ability to solve problems and make critical decisions under pressure. Through this approach, we develop players who are not only skilled but also prepared to compete at the highest level with confidence and resilience.

Core Principles & Coaching Philosophy

High-Intensity, High-Rep Workouts

Every drill is purposeful, game-relevant, and designed for maximum repetition.

We eliminate wasted movement and downtime to ensure players are constantly engaged.

Our practices simulate game speed and demand sustained focus and effort.

Fundamentals First

Each practice begins with essential skill work: ball handling, shooting mechanics, footwork, passing, and defensive positioning.

We reinforce the basics daily to build habits that translate directly to game situations.

Competition & Accountability

Players are challenged every day through tracked stats, competitive drills, and head-to-head matchups.

Every rep matters—personal responsibility and team accountability are non-negotiable.

Hard work and intensity set the tone for success.

Situational Awareness & Basketball IQ

Focused time is dedicated to late-game situations, special plays, and defensive/offensive adjustments.

Players learn clock management, shot selection, defensive rotations, and execution under pressure.

Understanding the game is just as important as playing it—our athletes must think the game at a high level.

Coaching at Every Level

The Central Basketball program is built on a unified coaching philosophy that develops players to succeed in the present while preparing them for the next level. Each team is a direct reflection and extension of the varsity program, reinforced through structured repetition and practice.

Organized, Purpose-Driven Practices

Every practice is meticulously planned, with no wasted time.

Clear objectives are set for each session to maximize growth and efficiency.

Each coach has a specific role in every drill, fostering accountability at all levels.

Setting & Raising Expectations

Players rise to the level of expectations set by the coaching staff.

If performance is lacking, we adjust expectations and reinforce them through consistent repetition.

Success is built on discipline, preparation, and attention to detail.

Training with Purpose & Variation

Our practices are high-intensity, short, and efficient—players are in constant motion.

There is no stagnation; players must adapt quickly, sharpening their ability to process the game in real time.

Drill structure varies daily to keep athletes engaged and mentally sharp.

Leadership & Accountability

True leadership comes from within the team, not just from the coaching staff.

Players must take ownership of the program’s standards, ensuring accountability and commitment.

Developing leadership skills is essential to sustaining success on and off the court.

Through structured, disciplined, and efficient practices, we instill a winning mentality that carries over into every game, every season, and every challenge our players face.

Shot Charts & Efficiency Ratings: I track shot selection, FG%, and offensive efficiency to improve scoring opportunities.

Plus/Minus & Lineup Data: I analyze how different lineups perform together to maximize team chemistry.

Defensive Metrics: I monitor deflections, turnovers, and opponent shooting percentages to measure defensive impact.

Pace & Possession Analysis: Understanding tempo and optimizing possessions is crucial for game control.

Player Recruitment

Player Development for College Basketball: I focus on developing players into college-ready athletes by improving:

Skill Level: Positionless basketball training, shooting mechanics, ball handling.

Basketball IQ: Understanding floor spacing, reading defenses, decision-making.

Strength & Conditioning: Preparing for the physicality of the college game.

Work Ethic: Holding players accountable for extra work outside of practice.

Academic & NCAA Compliance Support

GPA Monitoring: Players must maintain strong grades to meet eligibility requirements.

SAT/ACT Preparation: Encourage players to take tests early and retest if needed.

NCAA Eligibility Center Registration: Ensure players complete eligibility paperwork if required

Core Classes & Transcripts: Help players stay on track with NCAA academic requirements.

Exposure & Recruiting Assistance

Highlight Film Production: I help players and families create professional-quality highlight reels.

College Coach Outreach: I proactively contact college coaches and promote my players.

AAU & Showcase Events: I guide players to attend exposure camps and summer circuits.

Social Media Branding: Educating players on using platforms like Twitter/X to share highlights and engage with recruiters.

College Fit & Scholarship Guidance

Realistic Evaluation: Helping players understand what level (D1, D2, D3, NAIA, JUCO) is best for them.

School Research: Assisting families in identifying colleges that fit academically and athletically.

Recruiting Process Education: Teaching players how to communicate with coaches, visit schools, and evaluate offers.

Networking & Relationships

College Coach Contacts: I maintain relationships with college programs at all levels.

Alumni Pipeline: Connecting current players with former players who have played at the next level.

Recruiting Advocacy: I consistently reach out to coaches, sharing player stats, film, and character evaluations.

The Recruiting System

RECRUITING
The effects of recruiting on a basketball program are tremendous and play huge part on getting "buy in" from players. I have created a system that allows for communication with almost every NCAA (Division I, II, & III), NAIA, and NJCAA school in the United States on a regular basis keeping them informed about Central's players and program. The system has led to successful college placement of several players throughout the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and has created relationships that lead to easy access to college/university programs.

The recruiting system keeps colleges/universities updated with:

Weekly workout and weight room schedule.
In season game and practice schedules.
Information and highlights about our program and players.
Player and team accomplishments.
Schedules of players playing AAU Basketball during the summer.
Information about other players in the area that are potential college athletes.

Player Discipline

Discipline is the foundation of success on and off the court. I hold my players to the highest standards in conduct, effort, and accountability.

Expectations:

Accountability First – Players are responsible for their actions in the classroom, on the court, and in the community. Poor choices will have consequences.

Behavioral Standards – Disrespect toward teammates, coaches, teachers, or officials will not be tolerated. This includes attitude, effort, and adherence to team rules.

Academic & Attendance Expectations – Missing class, failing grades, or disciplinary issues in school will impact playing time and team status.

Consequences for Violations – Discipline will be handled progressively, ranging from extra conditioning to suspension or removal from the team for serious infractions.

Leadership Development – Players will be encouraged to hold each other accountable, fostering a team-first culture where discipline comes from within.

Multi-Sport Athlete

I believe in the value of multi-sport athletes and the benefits they bring to both individual development and team success. My goal is to foster an environment where student-athletes can compete in multiple sports without undue pressure, while maintaining academic excellence and overall well-being.

Core Principles:

Athlete-Centered Approach – The student’s growth, health, and future opportunities come first. I encourage participation in multiple sports to develop well-rounded skills and prevent burnout.

Collaboration Among Coaches – I communicate openly and work with other coaches to ensure training schedules, competition demands, and recovery time are balanced appropriately.

UIL Compliance & Fairness – All my decisions will align with UIL regulations to ensure fair treatment and eligibility for all athletes.

Commitment & Accountability – Athletes are expected to honor their in-season commitments while preparing for their next sport. I  emphasize responsibility, time management, and respect for all teams.

Strength & Development – Multi-sport participation enhances athleticism, competitiveness, and leadership skills, benefiting both the athlete and all  programs they are participating with.

By embracing a cooperative approach, I create a championship culture where student-athletes can thrive across multiple sports while maintaining academic and personal success.

Parent/Guardian Communication

Effective communication between coaches and parents is essential to building a successful program. I believe in transparency, respect, and collaboration to ensure that players receive the best possible experience. Expectations:

Open Door Policy – Parents are welcome to discuss their child’s progress but must follow proper communication protocols (schedule meetings rather than addressing concerns during or immediately after games).

Chain of Command – Players are expected to advocate for themselves first. If an issue arises, the player should speak with the coaching staff before involving parents.

Game-Day Communication – No parent-coach discussions about playing time or strategy will take place before, during, or immediately after a game. Meetings should be scheduled at a separate time.

Weekly Updates – Parents will receive regular updates via email or newsletters with schedules, expectations, and team announcements.

Supportive Culture – Parents are expected to support the team and their child positively, refraining from public criticism of players, coaches, or referees.

Staff Expectations

My coaching staff is the cornerstone of the program. To ensure that we all work towards a unified vision, I hold my staff to high standards in every aspect of their roles. Expectations include:

Commitment to Player Development: Every coach must prioritize the development of student-athletes, focusing on individual improvement, team success, and building strong character.

Collaboration: The coaching staff is a team. I expect all coaches, regardless of their position or level, to communicate openly, collaborate on strategy, and share ideas. This fosters consistency throughout the program.

Professionalism: We are role models for our players. I expect coaches to maintain a high level of professionalism on and off the court, including in their communication with parents, players, and other coaches.

Preparation & Organization: Every coach will be well-prepared for practices, games, and meetings. This means planning practices effectively, having clear expectations, and maintaining an organized and structured approach to training.

Accountability: Every coach is responsible for the success of the program, and each coach is held accountable for their individual contributions to the team and to player development.

 Sub-Varsity Team Management

Sub-varsity teams are essential for the development of our future varsity players. They represent a critical part of our overall player development pipeline.

My philosophy for sub-varsity management is:

Development-Centered Coaching: While the goal is always to win games, the sub-varsity teams are primarily focused on developing skills, basketball IQ, and character. I expect sub-varsity coaches to be patient, focusing on individual growth and team-oriented play.

Player Progression: Players on the sub-varsity teams should be prepared for promotion to the varsity level. I expect clear communication between sub-varsity and varsity coaches to track player development. We will work together to develop consistent systems for skill progression, decision-making, and game understanding.

Encouraging Leadership: Senior players in sub-varsity teams should be taught leadership principles and encouraged to set examples for younger players. These leaders are the future leaders of the varsity team, and we must develop their leadership potential early.

Inclusion & Team Building: Sub-varsity programs will emphasize team chemistry, communication, and a “we over me” mindset. Every player should feel valued and included, regardless of their playing time.

Middle School Program & Development

Building the Foundation

The middle school program plays a vital role in developing a successful varsity program. At this level, the focus is on participation, fundamental skill development, and fostering a passion for the game. While winning is important, it is secondary to teaching the game the right way and ensuring that players enjoy the experience. The middle school program establishes the foundation on which future success is built, aligning with Central Basketball’s philosophy, terminology, and fundamental approach to ensure continuity throughout the program.

Program Culture & Expectations

Culture

The middle school program should be an extension of the Central Basketball culture, instilling the same core values and expectations as the varsity program. Players must learn not only the game but also the standards, discipline, and teamwork that define Central Basketball. Understanding the culture early fosters confidence and prepares athletes for the next level.

Participation

All students should be encouraged to try out for basketball, with additional teams formed as needed to accommodate participation. Every player should receive meaningful playing time to support development and enthusiasm for the game.

Fundamentals First

Success at any level begins with mastering the fundamentals. Before players can learn offensive and defensive systems, they must develop essential skills such as ball handling, shooting, passing, footwork, and defensive positioning. The middle school program focuses on teaching these skills until they become second nature, making the transition to high school smoother and ensuring players are prepared for more advanced work.

Team Play

Basketball is a team sport, and at the middle school level, the emphasis should be on teamwork rather than individual performance. Players should learn to play within a system, share the ball, and contribute to team success rather than relying on one or two standout players. The program must reinforce the principle that no player is more important than the team.

Middle School Involvement in Central Basketball

To create a seamless transition and build excitement for the high school program, middle school athletes will have various opportunities to engage with Central Basketball throughout the year:

Middle School Video – A coach-instructed video demonstrating key offensive and defensive drills used at Central will be created as a reference for middle school coaches. This ensures consistency in teaching and benefits coaches without a basketball background.

Middle School Coaching Clinic – At the start of the season, a meeting will be held with middle school coaches to discuss program philosophy, coaching strategies, scouting, and expectations. The middle school video will be provided, and a Q&A session will offer additional guidance.

Middle School Night – Designated varsity home games will honor middle school teams, recognizing players, managers, and coaches at halftime to strengthen the connection between middle school and high school programs.

Hosting a Middle School Game or Tournament – Ideally, Central will host an eight-team middle school tournament, but at a minimum, we will provide an opportunity for middle school teams to compete at the high school gym. This exposure to the varsity environment will create excitement and motivation for younger players.

Varsity Practice at Feeder Schools – At least once per season, the varsity team will practice at each feeder middle school. Middle school athletes will have the opportunity to participate in drills alongside varsity players, reinforcing program expectations and providing hands-on development.

Spring Middle School Workouts – After the state tournament and before spring football begins, the high school coaching staff will conduct skill-development workouts at feeder middle schools to provide additional instruction and feedback.

Summer Camp – The high school and middle school coaching staffs will host a basketball camp for students entering 1st through 9th grade. The camp will emphasize fundamentals, team play, and community engagement while introducing players to Central Basketball’s philosophy.

Middle School Coaches & Player Development

The strength of the varsity program begins at the middle school level, making collaboration between middle and high school coaches essential. Expectations for middle school coaches include:

Consistent Skill Development – Middle school coaches must focus on fundamentals such as shooting, ball handling, passing, and defense while gradually introducing more advanced concepts. Their instruction should align with Central Basketball’s philosophies to ensure a smooth transition for players.

Preparation for High School Basketball – Players must develop the discipline, work ethic, and skill set necessary for success at the high school level. The middle school program should instill the habits and expectations that will carry over into the varsity program.

Open Communication – Regular meetings between high school and middle school coaches will ensure alignment on player development, team expectations, and program progression. The high school coaching staff will provide support, guidance, and resources to middle school coaches.

Character Development – Beyond basketball, the program must produce respectful, responsible, and disciplined student-athletes. Middle school coaches should emphasize values such as accountability, teamwork, and leadership, ensuring that players grow both on and off the court.

By fostering a strong middle school program, Central Basketball ensures long-term success, developing skilled, disciplined, and motivated athletes who are prepared to contribute at the varsity level.

Booster Club

The Booster Club is vital to the success of the basketball program, both on and off the court. It serves as the backbone of our program's community support, providing the resources necessary to elevate the student-athlete experience. My expectation is that the Booster Club will:

Fundraising & Resource Allocation: Actively support fundraising efforts to provide for equipment, uniforms, team travel, and other necessary resources. Every fundraiser will be a team effort, with players, coaches, and parents involved to build camaraderie and investment in the program.

Parental Involvement & Support: Encourage active participation from parents to foster a sense of community and engagement with the program. Parents will be asked to volunteer for events, support game days, and engage with players to enhance their experiences. Booster Club members should be advocates for the program in the local community.

Communication: The Booster Club will act as a communication bridge between the program and the wider school and community network. Regular updates on the team’s achievements, fundraising efforts, and upcoming events will be shared to maintain enthusiasm and support.

Celebration & Recognition: The Booster Club will organize events to recognize player achievements, milestones, and senior accomplishments. We will highlight the importance of both athletic and academic success.

Community Involvement

Basketball is more than just a game; it’s a platform to give back and build relationships within the community. I expect my players and coaching staff to be active contributors to Central High School and the greater community. Expectations:

Service Projects – Players will participate in community service activities such as youth camps, volunteer events, and outreach programs.

Youth Mentorship – Our high school players will serve as role models for younger athletes by engaging with middle school and elementary basketball programs.

School Spirit & Involvement – Players are expected to support other Central High School teams, attend school functions, and be positive ambassadors for the basketball program.

Respect & Representation – Players must represent the program well at all public events, demonstrating class, discipline, and leadership.

Building a Legacy – Our goal is to establish a culture where community service and involvement become part of each player’s identity, preparing them for leadership roles beyond basketball.

Budget Management

Managing the basketball program's budget is crucial to ensuring we have the resources needed to run a successful program. My approach to budget management includes:

Prioritizing Essentials: I work with the athletic director and Booster Club to identify the program's core needs, including equipment, uniforms, and travel costs. These essentials will always be the top priority.

Efficient Use of Funds: I ensure that every dollar spent is carefully considered. This includes looking for cost-effective solutions for equipment and other expenses, ensuring we get the best value for our money.

Fundraising: Beyond the Booster Club’s efforts, I lead additional fundraising initiatives such as hosting camps, clinics, or team events to supplement the budget.

Transparency: I maintain clear communication with the Booster Club and administration about how funds are allocated and spent, ensuring transparency and accountability.

UIL Compliance

As a coach in Texas, I am committed to ensuring our program is in full compliance with UIL regulations. This includes:

Eligibility: Ensuring that all players meet the eligibility requirements for competition, including academic standards, age restrictions, and transfer rules.

Practice & Game Scheduling: I adhere to UIL guidelines for practice schedules, including the number of hours per week and the start and end dates for practice and games.

Recruiting Rules: I follow UIL’s guidelines on recruiting and ensure that no inappropriate contact is made with athletes from other schools.

Sportsmanship: I emphasize sportsmanship at all levels of the program, ensuring that players, coaches, and fans adhere to UIL standards of behavior and respect for opponents.

Compliance Education: I educate players, coaches, and parents about the importance of UIL compliance, including rules on eligibility, recruitment, and other regulations.

Social Media

Social media is a powerful tool that can positively or negatively impact on our program and our players. It serves as a platform for communication, branding, and engagement with the community, but it also carries responsibility. Expectations:

Positive Representation – Players, coaches, and team personnel must always represent the program with integrity online. Negative, offensive, or inappropriate posts will not be tolerated.

Program Promotion – Our team accounts will highlight achievements, share important updates, and celebrate players’ successes on and off the court.

Personal Branding & Recruiting – Players will be educated on using social media responsibly to promote their skills, share highlight videos, and engage with college recruiters professionally.

No Distractions – Players are expected to stay focused during the season. Negative interactions, online conflicts, or excessive social media use that interferes with academics or athletics will be addressed.

Parent Engagement – Social media will serve as an information hub for schedules, game updates, and recognition of team efforts. Parents are encouraged to engage positively and support the team’s digital presence.
